Shiva Ram wins title

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 16: Shiva Ram Shrestha registered a four-stroke victory over Surya Sharma in the CMS Open Golf Tournament at the Gokarna Golf Club on Friday.

Nepal No 1 pro Shiva Ram carded two-over 74 on the final day for the 54-hole total of one-under 215, while Surya produced an one-under 71 card to finish second at three-over 219. Toran Bikram Shahi, who played a round of one-over 73 today, came third with the total score of 221. Out of the total cash purse of Rs 500,000, the top three pros received Rs 110,000, Rs 72,000 and Rs 54,000 respectively.

The CMS Open - sponsored by International Society for Medical Education (ISME) Pvt Ltd - is the seventh event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2011-12. This is Shiva Ram’s fourth title in the current season and 15th overall. The CMS open is the biggest one among the locally organized events in terms of prize money.

Shiva Ram, who began the final round with seven-shot advantage, made a good start saving pars on the first eight holes before carding a birdie on the ninth to take a turn at one-under 35. On the back nine, Shiva Ram suffered a double bogey on the par-5 11th hole before dropping shots on the 15th and 17th holes. His lone birdie on the back nine came on the 12th hole.

Surya carded birdies on the first and ninth holes against a lone bogey on the fourth hole to finish the front nine at one-under 35. After taking the turn, Surya saved a shot on the 13th and dropped one on the next hole to finish the last nine holes at even-par 36.

Toran shot three birdies against as many bogeys on the front nine and added another two birdies against a triple bogey on the back nine. His birdies came on the fourth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 17th, while he had bogeys on the first, sixth and eighth holes. He dropped three shots on the par-4 14th hole.

Rabi Khadka and Ramesh Nagarkoti, who both shot four-over 76 today, shared the fourth position with the score of nine-over 225. The duo earned Rs 36,500 each. CB Bhandari played a round of even-par 72 for a total of 226 to finish sixth and received Rs 25,000. Ramesh Adhikari, who shot 76 for the third consecutive day, came seventh at 228. Sanjay Lama and Ram Thapa and Deepak Thapa Magar shared the eighth position with the total score of 229. Sanjay played 81, while Ram carded 79 and Deepak shot 71 on the final day.

Rajan Thapa and Ram Krishna Shrestha were tied at 11th position with the score of 15-over 231. Mani Rai and Sabin Sapkota shared the 13th spot at 233, while Jaya Ram Shrestha and Umesh Nagarkoti came joint 15th at 234. Sachin Bhattarai finished 17th at 235, while Dhana Thapa and Deepak Acharya shared the 18th position at 237. Pashupati Sharma finished 20th at 29-over 245.

In Amateur section, Tashi Tsering claimed the trophy with the total score of six-over 222. Tashi carded two-over 74 on the final day to register a 12-stroke victory over Bikash Bogati. Bikash shot 74 for the three-day total of 234.

A total of 27 pros and 21 amateurs took part in the tournament that began on Wednesday. Because of the technical reasons, the prize ceremony will be held at the Gokarna Golf Club on Sunday.
