Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play: Shiva Ram wins title

KATHMANDU, January 26: Shiva Ram Shrestha defeated defending champion Ram Thapa 8/7 (eight-up with seven holes remaining) in the final of the Surya Nepal NPGA Match Play at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Thursday.
This was Shiva Ram’s fourth title in a row, six of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2011-12 and 17th overall. He had completed the hat-trick by winning CMS Open, Surya Nepal Western Open and Surya Nepal Eastern Open.
Shiva Ram earned Rs 50,000, while Ram pocketed Rs 30,000. Earlier, in the third-place match, Surya Prasad Sharma defeated Rabi Khadka 4/3. Surya received Rs 22,000 and Rabi got Rs 18,000. The four losing quarter-finalists received Rs 8,000 apiece, while the eight pros, who lost in the first round got Rs 5,000 each. Top 16 pros -- based on the 2010-11 Order of Merit – took part in the ninth event of the season.
In the 36-hole final, Shiva Ram dominated the field before completing the victory on the 29th hole. Shiva Ram won 13 holes, while Ram managed to win just five. Eleven holes were halved. Shiva Ram carded four birdies and an eagle. While Ram hit two birdies.
Shiva Ram took the lead from the first holes and never trailed. He also won the second, fifth, seventh and ninth holes, while Ram managed to win third and sixth holes on the first nine holes. The scores remained the same after the completion of the 18 holes as both the players won two holes each.
Shiva Ram then won the 20th hole to go 4-up before Ram bounced back on the next hole to cut the lead back to three. The players shared he next three holes before Shiva Ram won five straight holes from 25th to complete an easy victory.
In the 18-hole third-place match, Surya and Rabi won three holes each to take the turn with scores level. But Surya won the 10th, 11th and 12th to go 3-up, while both the players shared the next two holes and Surya won the 15th to claim the third position. Nepal PGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha and RNGC President Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha gave away prizes to the winners.
Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA) takes full responsibilty over the lapses that occured in the second day of the tournament. NPGA beleives that the incident occured due to its own technical fault and not of the host club, Royal Nepal Golf Club and it has also decided to take preventive measures to run the tournament in more professional manner in the future.
